In the world of Harry Potter the Dementors are evil, wraith-like beings that suck the soul out of their victims. The physical appearance of the Dementors varies in the film versions of Harry Potter: in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkabahn only their hands and mouths remain uncovered by dark cloaks, whereas Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix reveals significantly more of the creatures.
Dementors are sightless and hunt their victims by sensing their emotions. A Dementor absorbs the happiness of its victims, causing them to relive their worst memories. The most horrible fate they can inflict is the "Dementor's Kiss", which completely absorbs a person's soul and leaves the victim as a mindless shell. Because of their power and the fear they inspire, Dementors were used as the guardians of Azkaban; the wizard prison.
